For example, Lisa Merrithew, who was his deputy chief of staff, is now co-chairwoman of Equal Voice New Brunswick. I don’t know if she supported the Commission’s Report, but I’d hope so. Electoral reform has to get multi-party support. The Liberals may see the need now too.Wilf Dayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05546880754492040363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6615716556540686703.post-82820432365799693722010-11-02T20:36:36.399-04:002010-11-02T20:36:36.399-04:00I just came across your blog this morning and agre...I just came across your blog this morning and agree with Jamie. This is excellent work Wilf.

I was leader of the New Brunswick NDP for a year leading up to the 2006 election. During that spring, then premier Lord, approached me to find out if the party would support the work of the commission. I jumped on the opportunity.

I believe Lord was genuine in his efforts to reform the electoral system. All the work done by the commission went by the wayside when the Liberals came to power. I don't know if Premier Alward will revisit the issue.

I live in Nova Scotia now and have heard very little about proportional representation here. It's a conversation that should take place.

Allison Brewer
Halifax, N.S.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15445320304864445970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6615716556540686703.post-88078088854338859222010-09-30T13:21:04.815-04:002010-09-30T13:21:04.815-04:00The media have already paid some attention to Fair...The media have already paid some attention to Fair Vote Canada’s press release.

One hook is the fact that Bernard Lord’s Commission report might have been in action today, if he hadn’t lost a “wrong-winner” election in 2006. A sad irony.

A point for Liberals to consider is that many New Brunswick voters were voting against incumbents, not for the conservatives. The PCs would, presumably, not have won a majority if voters’ first choice had counted. But the Alternative Vote would not have helped; those who cast “strategic votes” for the PCs would have cast second preferences for the PCs, with the same outcome.

Electoral reform is not a partisan issue. A reform that helps only one party will never fly. If you can spread the word among Liberals and others, please feel free.

Do you have any ideas on what else Fair Vote Canada can do to get the message out?Wilf Dayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05546880754492040363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6615716556540686703.post-16497822153208477962010-09-30T08:41:11.394-04:002010-09-30T08:41:11.394-04:00Wilf this is excellent work and takes place in rea...Wilf this is excellent work and takes place in real life so to speak.
